The 4 S's
Shoes, Shorts, Shirts & Socks
Submitted by Mike Shuman, Shu's Idaho Running Company, Boise, ID

Shoes: Your GEAR! If you need new shoes, you do
n't want to wait until the day before to get them. H a ve your current shoes ch ecked about 2-3 weeks befor e your event. You want to be able to at least get 30 to 50 miles in them!

Shorts: The shorts you will run in! No cotton! Breathable! Tights look good too! Whether its
shorts or tights, run in them to know they work for you on that distance before your event.

Shirts: Stay out of cotton! Get a good cool-max top or something breathable. Same as
shorts, wear the shirt that works for you on event day. Some are more comfortable than
others!

Socks: The same thing! Get out of cotton. Cotton is the tool of the devil in running or
walking. You want to get a cool-max sock that will "Wick!" away the moisture. Breathable!

Remember this word, Breathable! If it's not breathable? Don't buy it!

Planning the Running Program

COMPETITIVE PROGRAM
How often should you have a race? Probably no more than a couple times per month for sponsored events. However, fun runs or estimated-time events can be held weekly without putting a strain on most club's resources or manpower.

How to Start a Running Club
Edited by Gar Williams, Jerry Kokesh, Jeff Darman, Carl Sniffen and Henley Gabeau

ESTABLISHING A CLUB
Starting a club can be approached in various ways, depending on the degree of interest among the local runners. If there is little activity in your area, interest in group runs might be generated as a preliminary or first step for a club. The easiest way to create interest is to schedule low-key events at the same time and locale, at regular intervals. For example, everyone might gather at 5:30 PM the local park (main parking lot) every Monday. A loop course probably is best, so that those who are strong enough to run multiple loops can do so.
